A few days ago I asked you guys a slew of questions on Instagram. It was super fun reading through the entries and hearing what you had to say about things like Instagram turnoffs and favorite accounts to follow.

I received an entry from someone who flipped the script and asked me: “What inspires me and where I get my inspiration to create from”. I thought it was a good topic to elaborate on because as creators and even as good ol’ human beings we’re always looking for something that sparks a light in us. That helps us create beautiful images, write words that resonate with a million strangers, or hop on a plane to discover a place you never knew existed.

I sat down and thought about this for awhile. Inspiration is everywhere…really it is. Go on a walk and you’ll find it hiding in little corners and crevices. Here are my top five ways to find inspiration when I’m feeling uninspired.

  1. Look to The Past – They always say to look forward to your future but in this case…there is SO MUCH INSPO from the past. Take a wild guess at what inspired me for this look? The 50’s. A simple headscarf women would wear to the beach and on date night. Wrapping this scarf around my head instantly perked up my outfit and my overall vibe. I felt something…and the images spoke for themselves. Look to the past for inspiration…old Audrey photos, a black and white classic film. Notice what catches your eye and bookmark it in your brain for later.

2. Magazines/Editorials – Now you’re probably thinking…no duh. But, when was the last time you went to a newsstand and spent $50 on an international magazine? Probably years. Magazines are a dying media…thanks to the internet and blogs. But, magazines ooze with inspiration…especially the editorial images. From interesting poses to interviews with some of the world’s most inspiring people. Magazines are a fresh way to seek inspo in a saturated digital world.

3. Travel – Another total…no duh. But I’m here to say that travel doesn’t immediately mean a 12 hr plane ride to Italy. Hop in a car with your best friend and go for a ride…1-2 hrs. I promise you will stumble upon something you’ve never seen before. Whenever I’m in a total funk a 1.5 ride to Palm Springs or Joshua Tree ALWAYS perks me up. It costs one full gas tank and nothing else. Changing your scenery is a great refresher for the mind, body and soul.

4. Pinterest – If you’re addicted to Instagram it’s time to move on. While Instagram is a great place to connect with people and build a community Pinterest is THE social media platform to gain inspiration. Why you might ask? It’s purely based on pinning things that inspire you. That’s it. There is no pressure for likes, comments and followers. You’re simply creating boards with all of your interests. It’s internal and focuses on what you like rather than what you are creating for others to like.

5. Collaborate – Inspiration and creativity are contagious. It’s true…and if you’re ever feeling uninspired find the most inspiring person in your circle and spend the day with them. If I’m feeling super blah a shoot with Enzie, or a coffee date with my best friend Jenna always helps me get inspired and motivated. Collaborating with other bloggers like Enocha or Quigley shoots me over the moon. Inspiration is contagious so get out and make some inspiring friends!
