Today marks 1 month of being a homeowner and boy does it feel ADULT. I still can’t believe Emin and I have a place to call our own – it feels surreal. It feels awe-inspiring. It also feels very, very scary. I mean it’s the ultimate American Dream and we happen to roll some dice and land on it.

Once we got the keys Emin and the Dads got straight to demolition. I think they were planning and scheming long before the keys were in our hands about demo day. We decided to do the demolition ourselves for a few key reasons. One being that it was cheaper and saved us a few hundred bucks and two because it was plain ol’ fun to break down some walls and tear down some cabinets. Who doesn’t want to swing a hammer into a wall? Over and over again.

We were smart about demolition and only took down the kitchen and drywall, leaving the beams exposed. We knew better than to take down any supporting structures. I highly suggest doing the demo yourself…if you’re that kind of person and have that kind of family. You know, the kind that likes to get down and dirty. We wanted the experience of demo day (or should I say demo week) because how often does that come by?

Things slowed down after demo week due to the holidays but we were able to meet with Paleny our Interior Designer. I met Paleny via Instagram (Instagram seems to be a great place for contacts and connections). Her friend had seen my Story requesting for an Interior Designer and had sent the Story to Paleny. One look at what she had done to her own home and I knew she was the one! You can see more of her beautiful work here.

We met with her to go over the overall design and layout and fell in love. Below is a sneak peek of where we’re headed. I’ll share a separate post and video about the whole design later!

The next step after finalizing the design + layout was finding a general contractor. Which is where we are today. We met with three different contractors and are awaiting quotes to make our final decision.

Choosing the right contractor is really, really important to us. We want someone who understands our vision and can deliver on budget, time and quality. Let me just tell you, it is HARD finding a general contractor.

Can’t wait to share next steps and progress! If you guys want a virtual tour of the house Pre-Renovation head over to my IGTV video HERE !
